l-Tyrosine plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormones. Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid, derived from phenylalanine in the presence of vitamin B6 and iron. Tyrosine combines with iodine to produce thyroxine (T4), the main hormone produced by the thyroid. T4 can also be converted into T3 (the secondary thyroid hormone) by the removal of an iodine molecule.

Iodine is absorbed by the thyroid gland and supports the formation of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones have the ability to cross cell membranes, thereby supporting all cells of the body. Once inside the cell, they promote metabolic function by enhancing mitochondrial activity and enzyme synthesis, especially in tissues and organs such as muscle and the liver.

Thyroid hormones are also involved in the myelination of the central nervous system and are essential for healthy brain development. In this sense, Iodine contributes to normal cognitive and neurological function.

Thyroid Support Complex also contains selenium and zinc which both protect the cells from oxidative stress.
