TMG (also known as anhydrous betaine) acts as a methyl donor, along with choline, folic acid, vitamin B12 and S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe). One of the major roles of TMG is in promoting healthy homocysteine metabolism.

TMG also has the ability to generate SAMe, one of the most important co-factors in healthy liver function.
